What is Ceremonial Cacao?

Ceremonial cacao isn’t just chocolate

It is plant medicine, a tool, a ritual and an invitation to connect more deeply with yourself.

Used for centuries across Mesoamerica and beyond, ceremonial cacao has been part of spiritual and healing practices, guiding communities to slow down, feel, and open their hearts. Traditionally, it was prepared with intention, often in group rituals or personal ceremonies, and valued for its energetic, emotional and physical effects.

When we talk about ceremonial cacao today, we mean a pure, minimally processed form, traditionally sourced from ethical, small-scale farms. It is not sweetened or flavoured like the chocolate you find in a shop. This cacao is rich, bitter and alive, packed with compounds that support mood, circulation and gentle activation of the nervous system. It carries spirit and when integrated with intention, it can be profoundly enriching for clarity, self-trust and heart-led living.

Why Cacao Works

Ceremonial cacao opens a space in your body that allows your heart to lead. On a physical level, it is rich in magnesium, flavonoids and other active compounds that support circulation, relax muscles and stimulate the heart. Research even points to cacao’s role in supporting stem cell repair and cardiovascular health, making it a healthy powerhouse for both body and mind.

Biologically, cacao encourages heart coherence, a state where the rhythms of your heart, mind and body align. In this state, your nervous system calms, clarity rises, intuition sharpens, and your capacity to make decisions from curiosity and self-compassion strengthens. In other words, it helps us step out of overthinking and into heart-led presence.

Spiritually, ceremonial cacao acts as a gentle emotional companion. It can guide us back to the language of the heart, illuminate what we may have neglected, and deepen our understanding of ourselves. Drinking it mindfully invites us to slow down, notice what is present, and pay attention to the subtle signals of body and heart. Over time, this practice helps us recognise patterns, process emotions and reconnect with our inner wisdom.

How to Approach a Ceremony

  • Buy ethically sourced cacao. I highly recommend my own supplier. Details of their incredible cacao can be found here, plus a 5% discount on all purchases.

  • Create a quiet, intentional space.

  • Pour a cup of warm ceremonial cacao. You can try my own recipe here.

  • Bringing your attention to your breath, your heart and the sensations in your body.

From there, the ceremony can expand into reflection, journaling, meditation or simply sitting with what arises. It’s about honouring yourself and giving your heart the chance to speak.

The Heart of the Practice

Ceremonial cacao is not a fix. It is an invitation. It teaches us patience, curiosity and self-compassion. It reminds us that we can lead from the heart, that we can make choices aligned with our truth and that we are capable of listening to our own inner wisdom.

If you’ve been living in your head, pushing forward, or feeling disconnected, cacao can help you step back, open your heart and remember how to be present with yourself.

If you’re ready to explore this in a ceremony with me, you’ll find one-to-one sessions, events and private ceremonies to support your journey.
